I've been watching this forum for a couple days now with the recent open-sourcing and GPL'ing of the java source code.
Not to sound like I am complaining or anything, but I find it unbelievable that nobody has posted about this and is excited about it. I was trying to re-task a few Sun Sparc servers recently to use Gentoo/sparc but the lack of a JRE/JDK for linux/sparc completely sunk the idea.
Ah well, just my 2 cents! |

If it actually comes out under the GPL, I'm definitely interested in trying it out on Gentoo/SPARC. One thing I'm wondering is if the open-sourced version(s) of Java will include a 1.4 series JVM or if it will just be 1.5. |

Yes, a big hey-ho to opensource Java.
I was starting to get the feeling that I'm the only one using OpenOffice on SPARC... |

Just as a headsup so people don't get overly excited, the GPLing of Sun's Java doesn't mean you can just build it on Linux/SPARC and it'll work since most of the job on porting it to sparc-linux specifics was done by the blackdown boys. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

So what about the blackdown boys? Do they still exist? Will they continue porting Java to sparc? And what about gnu classpath? Will they merge their code with the GPL'ed Java? Well, I don't expect to get answers to all of my questions. _________________ alias bauerbob |

I'm really glad they open sourced it. Otherwise large scale enterprise apps would have started moving towards Mono and C# once it's mature enough for everybody besides the M$ zealots. This would result in letting all sorts of bad visual basic "programmers" create bad code. |
