I've used previous distros in which if I ever wanted to find a file, i could type "locate filename" and it would spit back every file that contained "filename". It doesnt work in gentoo. Is there something that I need to install, or is there a similar command in gentoo?

You need to run 'updatedb' as root.

Yes, updatedb will do the trick, assuming you have already emerged the 'slocate' package.

normally, the database is updated with a cron job (daily or weekly),so you don't have to do an updatedb yourself (the update operation can take a while on bigger systems). So you might want to emerge cron as well.

well, slocate was not emerged during (my) installing 1.1a from stage2, just the "ordinary" locate. (Just if someone else might be missing it)

btw, fcron forgets to install its documentation in /usr/share/doc/ ... but thats for another forum ;)
