Sorry for a post that's only slightly related to Linux; I've got an old SparcStation 5 workstation that I've got up and running with Gentoo, but now I'm in the process of seeing how much 'oomph' I can eek out of this old box. I've got it set up as a network file share, and found that the processor is not being overdrawn on file transfers, but I'm guessing the old Seagate Cheetah 10GB SCSI drives I've got in it (x2 10GB drives) are slowing down network transfers. Anyone know what the upper hardware limits for newer SCSI drive that would allow an older Sparc5 workstation to still be able to use? _________________ "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguisable from magic." -- Arthur C. Ooo, now that goes over my head; how would I find that out? _________________ "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguisable from magic." -- Arthur C. Clarke |

I think, the SCSI type should be mentioned on the harddisk itself.
UW, U2W, U160, U320: possible SCSI types. |

The product page for the drives I'm using now is at http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/scsi/st39102lc.html. And there it lists them as "Ultra2 SCSI Wide" drives, which I'm guessing correlates to the U2W you mentioned. Sorry I'm more familiar with dealing with IDE drives, so these protocols don't mean much to me. Does this mean I have the capability to get something faster (at pulling data out) or no? _________________ "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguisable from magic." -- Arthur C. You can connect an U320 drive to a U2W port, but the I/O will be limited to 80MB/s. |
