Well, it seems as if XMMS is being masked (at least on AMD64).

I have been suing it for some time, to the point where ti is the only sound player I use.

What do you guys use instead? I heard good things about Rhythmbox, but it keeps crashing every time I try to load my mp3 library.

Any ideas of other good alternate players? Is BMP still active and well liked?

I was hoping to find something compatible with Audioscrobbler/last.fm (which XMMS has a plugin for)

Thanks,
Matt

There are plenty of threads in the forums regarding this same topic. A quick search with "xmms masked" as keywords will give you some threads about the topic. Like these ones:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-514433-highlight-xmms+masked.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-509819-highlight-xmms+masked.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-514437-highlight-xmms+masked.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-511055-highlight-xmms+masked.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-514394-highlight-xmms+masked.html

And probably many more. In all these threads people -besides crying about how crappy gentoo is cause xmms is getting removed from portage- also give suggestions on what to use. And in the bigger one some audacious dev also was talking with some people and porting some xmms plugins. Don't know if the last.fm support is built into audacious or it has been ported into a plugin.

I doubt mplayer can be used in a serious manner to manage big music colections, even if you use some advanced frontend like kaffeine. Gstreamer is unstable and I plainly dislike it. Arts is a no go either. So, my suggestion is to use xine. There are also frontends for gtk, like rhythmbox and quodlibet. I personally preffer amarok.

My apologies for insufficient searching.

I did a few searches but I got so many hits and none seemed directly relevant, that I figured I'd post my own.

I love Gentoo, and as much as I hate to admit it, it was time for XMMS to go. It's coded pretty terribly.

I will try amarok. Hopefully it will work for me. Thanks :)

Moved from Multimedia to Duplicate Threads.

The threads that 6thpink posted already have suggestions for alternative music players
