PostPosted: Wed Nov 08, 2006 8:35 pm    Post subject: X won't start, module doesen't exist [solved] Reply with quote

This problem occured when I updated the system. When I try to start X-windows, I get this error message:
Quote:
(EE) Failed to load module "bitmap" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "pcidata" (module does not exist, 0)

Fatal server error:
Unable to load required base modules, Exiting...

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peel) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Anyone familiar with the problem?

Just ask for the information you need.

Thanks

ops,

Is your modpath statement correct ?

Look at the top of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and it will say what ModulePath it is using.
My log shows
Code:
(==) ModulePath set to "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"

Do the missing modules exist in the ModulePath or are they elsewhere ?

You can add ModulePath statements to xorg.conf to fix things like this.

It saies:
Quote:
(**) ModulePath set to "/usr/lib/modulesd

/usr/lib/modules only contains a catalog called extensions

Any idea what the path should be, or what makes the module missing?

ops,

In xorg.conf, at the end of your Section "Files" add in

Code:
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
ModulePath "/usr/lib/modules"
then both will be used.

Whats in your /usr/lib/xorg/modules ?
Code:
$ ls /usr/lib/xorg/modules
dri         libcfb.so    libi2c.so      libscanpci.so   libxf1bpp.so
drivers     libcfb16.so  libint10.so    libshadow.so    libxf4bpp.so
extensions  libcfb32.so  libmfb.so      libshadowfb.so  libxf8_16bpp.so
fonts       libddc.so    libpcidata.so  libvbe.so       libxf8_32bpp.so
input       libexa.so    librac.so      libvgahw.so     linux
libafb.so   libfb.so     libramdac.so   libxaa.so       multimedia
is what I have

Thanks! That fixed that problem. When I start X now, I get a different error. Wonder why the moudlepath wasn't in the xorg.conf before.

Now it saies

Re-emerge ati-drivers, to recompile that module.

Can't quit X, it won't start. On any of the kernels...

Just reinstalled ati-drivers. Won't work.
Then I uninstalled the old ati-drivers and installed it again. Still won't work. Whene I run modprobe ati, it saies FATAL: Module ati not found

dmesg does not give any new output after trying to modprobe.

Oops, the module is named fglrx, not ati (see wiki page at "modprobe fglrx").

Ah, then that was actually the problem that started it all... the driver was renamed... Used to be called ati.

Now, over to next problem...

ops,

Can you post the entire xorg.conf and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log it generates when you try to startx ?
It will save faffing[1] about asking for odd snippets.

[1]faffing messing about with a large number of small messages.

The old fglrx module will be loaded. To load a new one, first do modprobe -r fglrx or reboot if your kernel does not support module unloading

Reloading the module didn't work. Acording to the Xorg.0.log, it seems like the flgrx driver is not the problem anymore.

ops,

The driver loaded, found a video card at
Code:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
but not one it knows.
There is a big list of supported chipsets at the end of the log - the driver claims you don't have one of those.

Please post your lspci output for your Video Card so we can see what you do have. It looks like a Radeon Mobility M7 LW, which is indeed not supported.

You're right there, I have a Ati Radeon Mobility M7 LW, or Radeon Mobility 7500 as it also is called. That's also what the lspci gives. But how come it used to work, and now it doesen't work? I've been using it in linux for years. Is there an update on the driver wich no longer supports Radeon Mobility M7 LW?

Guess I ought add that I've been using the ati driver and not the fglrx driver wich I'm using now.

ops,

The ati driver is the open source 'wrapper' for all the ati open source drivers ... its a list going back a very long time.
The fglrx is a closed source binary driver that provides 3D acceleration on the cards it supports.
In general, the open source drivers provide 2D but not 3D acceleration.

It looks like you need to go back to the ati driver provided with Xorg.

Hmm... Okai. I've changed back toati in xorg.conf. Now I get the old error message agan. Checked the folder /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers. There's a file there called ati_drv.so. Guess that's the driver.

ops,

That message means that the driver has a different interface to the one that Xorg was expecting.
You have a newer Xorg than that ati driver was made for or a new ati driver and old Xorg.
Portage should protect you from that.

Your log starts
Code:
X Window System Version 7.1.1
it follows you have an old ati driver.
Code:
emerge  -av x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati
to get the new open source driver.
Before you hit Y to do it, compare the old and new versions. Hopefully you are getting a newer version.

Ah, Finally got it working! Upgrading the driver helped. Then I just had to fix a couple of other bugs, and now it's finally working. Living with a disfunctional computer feels like living in the stone age.

Still my usb mouse doesen't work. But that I should manage to fix.

Tanks a lot folks!

Could have saved a lot of hazards by just updating the driver in the first place
But hey, why do it the easy way...
