In mythtv-setup the mythbackend server's ip is set to 127.0.0.1 and that is my lo address. I'm running the backend on this computer. When I try and watch TV in mythfrontend it complains that it can't connect to the backend. I use a strict firewall on my router, could this be the reason why it can't connect? I figure it's a local service so there's no need to use the network.

How can I get mythfrontend to connect to the backend that's running on the same machine?

I had the same issue. There are several ways around it, check the forums.

First thing to check: Is your backend running?

of course it's running :P which forums are you talking about? These ones?

EDIT: Ok, turns out mythbackend shuts down after about 5 seconds of running. My recording directory isn't writable. How do I make the directory writable to group and others with chmod?

It happens; I believe you are looking for chown.

Code:
chown group /path/to/recording/directory

Hope that helps,
- Eschmann

Additional: if this resolved your issues, please add [solved] to the thread title. Thanks man.

I don't want to create any more threads on mythtv so i'll post my latest problem here. I don't know what I did to make this happen, but now whenever I try to watch TV in mythfrontend (it used to work but without sound) the screen goes black for half a second and then back to the mythtv menu. The output from xterm says that mythtv 'Failed to initialize LiveTV.'

I remerged mythtv, deleted all the configuration directories, and redid the entire gentoo wiki guide to setting it up, still the same problem. My analog v4l saa7134 is set up correctly. Why can't I watch TV?

mythbackend is probably not able to read from your capture card, or it's unable to write the file out for some reason. Check your mythbackend log for errors about reading from your capture card.
