Can't emerge horde-imp & slow squirrelmail

I've got Apache 1.3.27 emerged, along with mod_php, mod_ssl, and finally squirrelmail, and they all work (finally).

Squirrelmail is really slow for me, and I wanted to try IMP. When I try to emerge horde-imp, it complains that PHP doesn't have IMAP support.

Do I need to recompile PHP? If so, what USE flags should I use?

If it matters:
the system is a single proc PIII-500, home built system.

My Exchange 2000 server is the IMAP server for SquirrelMail. I have a home lan with 100MBit switch.. could the fact that squirrelmail is having to go across the lan for email be part of the problem?

I doubt it's much comfort, but Im having the same problem with Squirrel and Exchange.
I've tried Squirrelmail on two boxes, one Gentoo/Apache and one Solaris9/Apache, it's slow on both of them.
