This tips consists in replacing xmessage with gxmessage
gxmessage website wrote:
A GTK2 based xmessage clone, gxmessage tries to be as compatible as possible. You might like it if you're running a mostly GTK desktop.

It does what is said, and on my computer, gxmessage is as fast as xmessage, so there is no reason not to change.

First things first, emerge gxmessage and see whether you like it
Code:
emerge gxmessage
man gxmessage
dmesg | /usr/bin/gxmessage -borderless -center -nofocus -file -
Last line is only an example.
Nice, right?
So let's change. First, we remove xmessage, then have portage not complaining about it missing, then write a wrapper script so that programs relying on xmessage can find it.
Code:
emerge -C xmessage
echo "x11-apps/xmessage-1.0.1" >> /etc/portage/profile/package.provided

/usr/bin/xmesage:
#!/bin/sh
gxmessage -center -nofocus "${@}"

and make the wrapper executable chmod 755 /usr/bin/xmessage

The second line can feature any gxmessage-specific options you like, of course.

You are done! Try it with dmesg|xmessage -file -

I would be interested in something similar for xman (it is so ugly I always use man from the console.)

eix gives me the following items :
Code:

* app-text/tkman
     Available versions:  2.1 2.1-r1 ~2.2
     Installed:                   none
     Homepage:               http://tkman.sourceforge.net/
     Description:              TkMan man and info page browser

Code:

* app-text/manedit
     Available versions:  0.6.1 ~0.7.1
     Installed:                   none
     Homepage:               http://wolfpack.twu.net/ManEdit/
     Description:              Man page editor using XML tags

I haven't test them since I'm fine with the old man command :wink:

[Edit] I don't really use the old man but rather vim :roll:

Thank you, one can use emacs/vim also, but I just like gtk or console. One is pretty, the other one useful...

Tk is not my thing. There used to be gman but it is lost and long forgotten. I think kde people have something too, at least konqueror. But nothing for gtk.

Konqueror supports man pages.

e.g. man:/less
or shorter: #less

The stuff is listed here:
