I purchased a Flatron L1915S LCD monitor recently. It's been running fine until recently. This morning when I booted up gentoo it wouldn't display the splash screen or any of the startup messages. It went into X OK and I'm able to use the graphical screen. I got a black screen with "Out of range 68.7kHz / 85Hz" displayed by the monitor (not gentoo). It was working fine a few days ago.

Here's the relevant line in my grub.conf:

/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro quiet video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-16@85 splash=silent,theme:emergence CONSOLE=/dev/tty1

I'm mystified as to why this only occurred recently. Maybe its because I've been using another distro with a splash screen and thats ruined it???

Any idea (more importantly) how I can fix this?

I have tried to do a factory reset of my monitor, but have had no joy with this.

Nope.

Fixed it by changing the "80" to "50":
Quote:
/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro quiet video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-16@50 splash=silent,theme:emergence CONSOLE=/dev/tty1

Don't know why it just started today.

you realize that means you're running at ahideously low refresh rate, right? if it's a nice monitor try 70 or 75, and those nasty wierd vibratey scan lines will go away (or maybe they don't give you a headache?)
