Hi there,
I've got a 512 MB USB Stick from Kingston. When I plug it in my USB-Port I get the following messages:
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 77
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 77

Vendor: Model: USB Flash Memory Rev: 6.00
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
SCSI device sdb: 1001472 512-byte hdwr sectors (513 MB)
sdb: Write Protect is off
sdb: Mode Sense: 0b 00 00 08
sdb: assuming drive cache: write through

sd 4:0:0:0: Attached scsi removable disk sdb

Everything seems fine. The Stick is mounted and I can write to it.
But here's the problem:
If I unplug the stick after writing some data to it and plug it in again sometimes there is no data on it.
It's the same when I try to delete some data from the stick. Everything looks ok but after plugging in the stick again all deleted
files are still there. I've tried another stick but it makes no difference.
I've loaded all necessary modules. The stick is formated with fat16. I've already tried fat32 but nothing changes.
My kernelversion: 2.6.17-gentoo-r8
Maybe someone can help me! |

Do you unmount the stick before unplugging it? _________________ "Mr Thomas Edison has been up on the two previous nights discovering 'a bug' in his phonograph." --Pall Mall Gazette (1889)

No I don't. A few month ago It worked without unmounting the stick.
Now I've tried it with unmounting. Seems to work.
Thank you |

you can run the command
before unplugging
or have your stick mounted with the 'sync' option _________________ Unanswered Post Initiative | Search | FAQ

Hi,
sync probably prevents data loss, but what about filesystem corruption?
I'm not sure about this
IMHO, the only way to be sure is to unmount the filesystem. _________________ It's only when you look at an ant through a magnifying glass on a sunny day that you realise how often they burst into flames. |
