The company I work at used to be free software dependent when they were poor. They do simple website development and hosting and used to use FreeBSD machines with Perl, PHP and MySQL for programming and qmail/postfix for mail server software. I think Dreamweaver and Photoshop were the only non-free apps they used for static web page development.

They are now mostly a Microsoft shop, since the cash has started flowing in. Most projects are now using .Net and some hosting is also done on Windows servers.

"Full of Open Source" describes some of the people who use it, though.

It's unlikely that most major companies would use free software, since using proprietary brings them into the same vendor lock as everyone else. Once you're compatible with peers, then nothing else matters.

The good stuff is in development. So he probably chose the next best thing he could get hold of. ;)
