Hello!

I set up Gentoo on an SGI Indigo2 and tried to boot it. I couldn't compile a 64bit Kernelimage because of some misconfiguration of kgcc64, gcc, binutils or whatever (but this is a different issue I want to deal with once I've booted the machine) and so I downloaded a kernel image from http://dev.gentoo.org/~redhatter/mips/sgi/ip28/kernel-images/. I put it in /boot as well as to the Volume header under different names (working, vmlinux ...). Now the problem: I can't figure out how to configure ARCLoad and the SGI Prom to boot this kernel and my system. The documentation is a bit confusing. There are several ways described how to boot the system (with ARCLoad from Volume Header, direct from VH a.s.o.) but none is complete. Also there is mentioned that one can boot from the boot partition but not how to do this. I also had a look at http://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/ARCLoad but this was not illuminative too. Arcload can't find arc.cf and the kernel image. Please can someone explain to me the following things:
  • Where to place arc.cf
  • Where to place the kernelimage and how to name it (I used the standard arc.cf from the guide)
  • What value to set for OSLoadPartition (as this is where Arcload seems to search for arc.cf)

My configuration is pretty standard: /boot -> /dev/sda1; /root -> /dev/sda3
As I wrote above I put sash64 and arc.cf to the VH and the kernelimage to (name: working) but also to /boot

Thanks, Cantrop

On the volume header.

Place it on the VH. Name it however you wish. Important is that the name conforms to the one defined in arc.cf

I think the OSLoadPartition is not important since the root partition is taken from arc.cf. But you should set the OSLoadFilename to the kernel you want to boot and the OSLoader to the sash64.

Meanwhile I figured it out.

No, it is important. I set it now to
Code:
scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(8)
and now it finds arc.cf on the volume header and boots the kernel. Unfortunately it stops right after the penguin boot logo :cry: Guess I have to use another kernel image and/or try to go on in compiling it myself.

Interesting, that kernel image works flawlessly here. Have you tried using serial console? That's how I normally boot my IP28 (although, IMPACT did work last time I tried).

You mean setting "setenv console d1" and connect via minicom and a serial cable? No I haven't tried this yet. Have to grab a serial cable first...
