Hey... yes, that sounds a bit funny - two days ago I complained about to few updates :-D (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-511651.html)

Anyway, with your help portage wants to update some hundret packages every day, though the system is fresh installed with nothing more than some standard-packages provided by the LiveCD. Additionally, portages updates packages that do not have any version change at all - how can that be?

Yesterday he updated for 10 hours, 167 packages, today he wanted to emerge 137 - I cancelled that.

The problem only appears if I run "emerge -uDN world", it does not for "emerge -uD world". So... what about that --newuse thing? Should I only append that if actually changed my USE-string in the /etc/make.conf-file? Why does emerge re-emerge all packages in the use list and all their dependencies if I tell him to update?

And the most important of all - will "emerge -uD world" update ALL packages, if I do not change any USE-directives?

Thanks again ;-)

Code:

emerge -uDN world

will tell portage that there is a new set of use flags, so recompile everything w/ the new set of use flags (which just makes it reinstall most of the same stuff, since there is no change in flags)

Code:

emerge -uD world

just updates stuff in portage that has a new version. (against the flags in /etc/make.conf)

Code:

So... what about that --newuse thing? Should I only append that if actually changed my USE-string in the /etc/make.conf-file?

Yes

Thanks... so, as long as I do not change the USE-Flags I just run it without --newuse and be happy? No disadvantage at all?

--newuse will cause portage to check any changes in USE-flags and recompile any packages that has some sort of difference in USE-flags. It will definitly NOT re-emerge everything (otherwise I would be recompiling my entire system about every week).
I think it's wise to run emerge world with the --newuse flag, because changes in USE-flag can't cause any conflicts that way.

It you want to find out why portage wants to re-emerge so much, run it with the -uDNatv options (update, deep, newuse, ask, tree, verbose). Changes in USE-flags will be in yellow.

I'm duping this in favour of topic 511886. Now you're experiencing the consequences of the fix...
