Come posso installare Gentoo su un IBM THINKPAD X30 che non ha unità ottica?

Con un unità ottica usb? via boot di rete? con l'imposizione delle mani?
Secondo me la terza è la più veloce ma richiede una certa esperienza... io proverei prima le prime due :wink:

Ma via boot di rete c'è comunque bisogno del minimal cd e quindi dell'unità ottica usb....o sbaglio?
Col boot da floppy nun gna famo?
Il mio gentoo installato su altro pc mi può aiutare?

Ti posso dire cosa che farei io ;):

Soluzione 1 (veloce e sbrigativa):

Mi scaricherei una di quelle distro che stanno comodamente in un floppy ed installerei da li.

Soluzione 2 (lunga ma figa ;) )

Supponendo che tu abbia una macchina linux disponibile, andrei sul sito del progetto LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) e creerei un server tftp+dhcp ed il relativo floppy per il boot da rete tramite protocollo PXE o simili.

Io installerei in chroot su un'altra macchina.

Oppure (o con successivo) boot da penna usb.

Questa soluzione mi sembra più alla mia portata.
Posso mettere l'immagine dell'universal cd su la penna usb e poi far fare il boot da lì?
Nel Bios non ricordo di aver visto Boot da device usb :roll:

non ho mai installato gentoo da boot di rete ma ubuntu si ed è facilissimo... (c'è un howto banale nella documentazione ubuntu mi pare) siccome ad installare ubuntu ci vuole mezz'ora ti metti una distro funzionante su quella macchina e poi fai tutto quello che ti pare (installazione in chroot per esempio)
io ho fatto così per un vecchio portatile della mia ragazza (pentium 3 750 con lettore cd morto e floppy che non stava tanto bene)
(poi ci ho installato windows via vmware ma quella è un'altra storia)

Io ho un IBM T30 che fa uno stupendo boot da usb ;)
Penso che i 2 pc non siano cosi' diversi, quindi - appunto - un boot da usb dovrebbe andare bene ;)
