I just started working in gentoo and.....I just wanted to know is it honestly worth the trouble to invest this amount of time and effort into it. Don't get me wrong I enjoy doing most of it, but is it really worth the trouble?

If you want to learn and value the experience, it's definitely worth it.

If you just want something that works, try some other distribution like Ubuntu.

depends on what your goals are. personally, I find gentoo boxes great to maintain once they're up.

Like the above posters said, if you want to learn how Linux works, then continue using Gentoo. If you on the other hand just want to use Linux, and use it for years without having little to no idea how things works under those fancy graphical user interfaces, then choose another Linux, like Ubuntu.
