Hi. I have an ati radeon xpress 200m video card in my laptop. Lately I tried to upgrade to xorg 7.1 and the latest ati-drivers. They worked, and i logged into X but I didn't get any 3D acceleration. What should I do to try and fix this? Any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Any messages in your xorg log files?

My bad. Okay, so i'm using the ati-drivers-8.29.6 and kernel 2.6.18-r2. Here is my xorg.conf

This last bit tells us that you are loading the ati proprietary driver. Like I said before you should run eselect which will update glx library links so that xorg will load the ati glx stuff instead. Make sure that the kernel driver matches the one described in your xorg.conf as well.
DISLAIMER: I use nvidia so I cant provide more specific instructions. I think there is an article on the gentoo wiki refering to specifics of getting 3D set up and running sweetly.

Thanks for the advice, i'll look into those three things. But I find my whole situation odd considering that for the longest time I used ati-drivers-8.24.8 and had 3D accel without having to do any extra steps. When you tell me to run eselect you do mean to run 'eselect opengl set ati'? AFAIK when installing the ati-drivers it switches it to ati for you. But i'll check it out after I get home from work.

Yep thats the line. I'm guessing if you reinstall xorg then it gets set back so that may have happened. Also I found with the ebuilds for nvidia drivers that the commands dont always stick for whatever reason. Never hurts to check. You can see by "eselect opengl list".

Also with the nvidia drivers we have to NOT load dri and agpgart stuff because the kernel module handles that. Xorg usually disables 3D in that case too. But from what youve said, you already had the system working in current configuration, so thats probably not it.

Didn't work. In fact, once i did that and ran startx, my system hard-locked with a black screen. So I unmasked the latest ati-drivers and upgraded to those and I have X running again. Same errors were reported in the Xorg log file with the 8.30.3-r1 drivers.

I had the same issue upgrading to Xorg 7.1 on a Radeon 9600.

My problem was pretty much re-compiling x11-drm against the new x server, even though I had the latest version.

Actually I don't have x11-drm installed on my system. I'll give it a shot though and see what happens. On another note though when I booted into my system and ran 'eselect opengl set ati' (when i was on 8.29.6) and then ran 'startx' my sytem hardlocked. So I rebooted and updated to 8.30.3-r1 and ran startx. X loaded but I got no 3d Acceleration. So i logged out of X ran 'eselect opengl set ati' (even though i was told i was already using it), started X and again, my system hard-locked. So for the time being i'm using the open-source driver, but I would really like to have 3D acceleration working. Any more ideas?

I found a link to another forum entry on this topic. Makes for really interesting reading. As I see it you need to go back to older versions of xorg and drivers to get it working again... :( Anyway thats about the best I can do for you here. YMMV, but above all have fun...
