I generally followed the X Server HOWTO in setting up my X window, but I have a problem I don't understand...

When I boot my laptop, and start my X session (I use startx), the X window opens in the desired 1024x768 resolution. It stays in that resolution, until I close X and once again open it... It then comes up with a resolution of 640x480, and stays in that resolution, through multiple tries, until I reboot the laptop! :(

I've looked over var/log/Xorg.0.log, which can be seen for a 1024x768 resolution situation, or also for a 640x480 resolution situation.

I'm not sure where to turn, next...

Does anyone have thoughts about this??

Thanks!

No, I didn't try that. Would that be of benefit if I want to just boot to console and only use an X session sporadically?

The negatives I can parse out my Xorg.0.log are as follows:
Code:
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/" does not exist.
   Entry deleted from font path.
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)

(II) RADEON(0): AGP card detected
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
[drm] failed to load kernel module "radeon"
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed to open the DRM

(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to detect secondary monitor DDC, default HSync and VRefresh used

(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled

Is there any liklihood of that causing my problem? :?

OK, I may be on to something...

I cleared up the Xorg.0.log error:
Code:
drmOpenDevice: Open failed

...by emerging x11-base/x11-drm.

Still though, I have the altered X resolution problem, as before, but I now notice somewhat different Xorg.0.log output when X is opening to 1024x768 resolution (just after reboot) verses when it opens to just 640x480 resolution (the 2nd time X opens after a single boot). The difference shows up as follows:
Code:

Output when X successfully opens at 1024x768:

(II) RADEON(0): Secondary:
 Monitor   -- NONE
 Connector -- VGA
 DAC Type  -- Primary
 TMDS Type -- NONE
 DDC Type  -- VGA_DDC
(II) RADEON(0): PLL parameters: rf=2700 rd=12 min=12000 max=35000; xclk=18300
(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to detect secondary monitor, MergedFB/Clone mode disabled

Verses the Xorg.0.log output during a failure to achieve 1024x768, and defaulting to 640x480 resolution:

I really have no idea why X launches differently for launches after the 1st "post boot" launch, but this log comparison must shed some light on what's happening! I'm just way too inexperienced in these matters to make that determination, myself. :(

I really need the help of someone with more expertise!

Please!!

Sound familiar?

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-508888-highlight-.html

My guess is that the ati driver is buggy. Tried updating the driver?

Turns out... it was, indeed, a "buggy" driver. As was recently revealed in the above referenced link, downgrading to xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 and xf86-video-ati-6.5.8.0 (as well as associated dependencies) solves the problem! :D

Thanks, again for your help!

new nvidia drivers try to use EDID, you can disable it adding -->>

Code:
    Option      "Metamodes" "1152x864"
    Option      "UseEDID" "FALSE"

into MONITOR section of xorg.....
