i dunno how many windows users there are here, but windows had something called active desktop. the way microsoft went about doing it was a bit half-assed (it'd get a bit flaky from time to time) but the concept was pretty cool.
you could load web apps into the background of the desktop (more like embed them). you could even load an .html file as your bg "image". this lead to some serious custom desktops that i had tested out. you could effectively design your OWN wm on top of the one you currently use. using java or whatever.
is there something like this for linux?

KDE can do this (but better) by going into Configure Desktop, Background, and telling it to use a Background Program. |
