Hi all,

I'm looking at getting an Ultra 10 as a plaything to install Gentoo on.

I'm used to IA32 and know how much memory I need for what I do there.
How much memory does an Ultra 10 need so it doesn't go into swapping while its running mundane things and compiling in the background ?

I have UltraSparc IIi 270Mhz
64MB - stage 3, console works XFCE works poorly
128MB - XFCE starts to work better but very easily starts to swap
192MB - gnome (no eye candy) starts to work not so bad at least short after starting - disk reads (2*64MB 50ns + 2*32MB 60ns)
384 - O.K.(no eye candy) but disk reads are still annoying - running kuroo takes ages! (2*64MB 50ns + 2*128MB 60ns)

Note there are 2 kinds of RAM available. Ordinary 60ns and rare 50ns. Try to get non sun 60ns. They should be cheaper.

I strongly advice you to get extra hd controller. Onboard IDE on U5/U10 (use same main board) are broken. They run in PIO16 mode only (in practice 12MB/s only). Better hd controllers will seriously boost your system. Try also to get 400/440 Mhz processor (L2=2MB)

flak7,

I should be getting a 440MHz CPU and after reading your memory advice, go for 512Mb.
It looks like I need to put a PCI card HDD controller on the shopping list too.

Thanks for your help.
