I can't update much at the moment because portage is complaining of a blocking package which it refuses to believe isn't there anymore:

Code:

# emerge -uvD world
Calculating world dependencies... done!

!!! Error: the sys-libs/libutempter package conflicts with another package;
!!!        the two packages cannot be installed on the same system together.
!!!        Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

that seemed simple enough:

Code:

# emerge -C libutempter

--- Couldn't find 'libutempter' to unmerge.

>>> No packages selected for removal by unmerge.

it's not there because I already unmerged it; portage still thinks it's there, though - I even tried re-emerging it and then removing it again, but it makes no difference. anyone got any ideas?

it wants to install libutempter
You should remove the other package.

I suggest you follow that advice.

libutempter is already installed - that's the problem!

Code:

# emerge --pretend -v libutempter

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] sys-libs/libutempter-1.1.4.1  0 kB

# emerge --pretend -uvD world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating world dependencies  ..... ..... done!
[blocks B     ] sys-libs/libutempter (is blocking sys-apps/utempter-0.5.5.6)

libutempter is blocking utempter - but if i remove libutempter, portage ignores it and acts as if it's still installed, giving the same 'blocking' error.

EDIT: actually both utempter and libutempter are installed; removing utempter (contrary to portage's request) seems to have solved it, with libutempter retained. is this a fault in an ebuild somewhere?
