I am using aRts with KDE, but the ebuilds for mythtv do not seem to compile aRts in. The configuration line in the ebuilds shows "--disable-audio-arts" hardcoded in (not a USE flag). And since MythTV would then use ALSA directly, KDE (3.5) will block it occasionally.
Is there a reason Gentoo has decided to omit aRts from the MythTV ebuild
Quick Note: I tried a modified ebuild that would compile in aRts. Now there is no sound (for ALSA or aRts settings) but a bunch of error messages along the lines of
NVP::AddAudioData():p1: Audio buffer overflow, audio data lost!
So mabye there is a good reason.
Specs:
Core2Duo E6700
MSI P6N SLI Platinum motherboard
NVidia GeForce 7600GS
2GB RAM
PVR-500 TV-Tuner
Thanks

This is not really on topic for your issue but you may want to look at something other than KDE for a Mythtv desktop. I run Fluxbox. It is very light on system resources, is quite flexible, and works very well overall.

Good luck! _________________ http://www.brokenspoke.ca

If it's a dedicated myth box then go with fluxbox like kands suggested, it's an excellent WM for myth.
If you're just using myth as well as your desktop then ditch arts and keep KDE.
Arts is pure pain you can easily live without - unless you need it for a _very_ specific purpose. |

It's not a dedicated MythTV box, just my desktop. Also, I thought KDE used aRts as its sound system. I haven't really found a place to change it. The KDE Control Center just has Enable/Disable the "sound system" which I have inferred to be aRts.
I seem to remember playing around with an aRts-less KDE installation when I was first trying Gentoo (-arts USE flag), and that basically everything was ok except the KDE sound system wouldn't work. Not too much of a loss, just some missing KDE sounds.
Of course this might be a moot point with KDE4 coming.
Thanks for the replies
