A few weeks ago I did an emerge -uD world on my Ultra 2 box, and then shut it down.
Now when I boot the system the localmount (i think) initscript can not find the LVM device nodes.

When looking through the boot log the problem seems to be that the vgscan command is run
before the root filesystem is mounted r/w, and thus cannot write the /etc/lvmtab file to disk.
When I log in (at the maintanance prompt) I can just run vgscan and vgchange -ay and everything is possible to mount.

Anyone seen this before ? Where can I find the file that controls the LVM startup ?

The disk system is made up of two 18 GB disks with the following layout

sda1 + sdb1 mirror /dev/md0 (root filesystem)
sda2 + sdb2 mirror /dev/md1 (swap)
sda4 + sdb4 mirror /dev/md2 (LVM)

Any pointers would be appreciated

Daniel

is your root filesystem on lvm? If so, you must have the lvm libs statically included in the initrd. And if this is the case, it is possible that after upgrading you now have different lvm versions or something like that.

On a side note: why having swap on raid? This is not needed. Just use two swaps and the kernel will stripe them for you

No, the root filesystem is a normal ext3 filesystem and this still works. But I have /var and /usr on LVMs
and they don´t work. Since all I have to do is run vgscan & vgchange at the prompt to get it working again,
I guess it is a problem with the startup order.

Swap in my case is mirrored on RAID,I don´t want them striped. If you have striped swap and one disk fails while swapping
I guess you are in trouble. Maybe a bit paranoid, but you never know....

sorry about the RAID thing, I've thought you were doing a RAID 0

With regard to the LVM issue, it works fine with me.. so I would suggest to unmerge it and reemerge the beast, maybe some config file will be updated. I don't think it is your job to tweak the boot process, this should be handle without problems

No solution yet, haven´t spent much time with it lately though.
