I have an old ATI Radeon, you know, the ones that are well-supported by the open-source radeon driver. I recently broke my monitor, and I have a TV next to my computer, and a monitor connected to anothre computer. What do I have to do to set up TV-out on this card? Do I need any use-flags for it? How do I tell Gentoo to use TV-out by default? I won't get a new monitor for a while, so what do I have to do aside from connect the yellow wire to my TV and turn it on?

Well, first off, you're going to need to hook that other monitor up to your computer (the one with the failed monitor), or at least ssh into your old box from another computer. Secondly, check out this howto: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_TV-Out
Good luck! |

Thanks... I was honestly expecting someone to scream RTFM. Now, you said "ssh into my computer." Why didn't I think of that? I'm looking into a tutorial now...
It looks like the official radeon driver doesn't support TV-Out, so now I have to patch my current driver.
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127642 has an ebuild already but I'm filing a bug report to the xorg developers to see if they'd add the patch into the official driver. |

Actually, it turns out that the cord for the other monitor is not long enough, and my brother won't get off of the computer long enough to let me use the monitor in the first place. I am emerging openssh on both of my computers (I think I unmerged it on both of them), so how would I set up ssh without being able to see?
If you can tell me just what string of commands to use to set it up, I'd be set.
emerge openssh && sshd
is all I've got, is that enough to get me into my computer from my laptop? |

EDIT: Screw this crap. I'll just wait until I get a new monitor. |

Lol. Yes, a new monitor would be best. If you're still in the mood to try this out, the command is
emerge openssh && /etc/init.d/sshd start
Other than that I'm all up for you getting a new monitor. |

I already did the ssh thing... and in the process decided to re-install grub and did it wrong, now I can't fix it because I don't think LiveCDs have drivers for TV-Out. Not only that, but StepMania would probably look crappy on a TV anyway. |

Hopefully some time this week actually. It depends on when me and my dad can get a crisp $20 and grab the thing from the liquidation at his job (he works at Travelers insurance company, and you know how insurance companies sell all their old used junk... that's where I got this laptop actually ) |
