I have an application (only the binaries) that requires RPM to do the install. Can I convert is to some format that I can easily install on gentoo. ? Or can I use RPM in this one case.

I have not installed getoo yet, as I need to able to install this one app.

RPM is in the portage tree. It works just fine and is used in the exact same way as in a normal rpm distro. The only thing that you would have to ensure is that all the dependencies of the rpm are met either by other rpms or by ebuilds in the portage tree.

Of course, you should use portage ebuilds if they are available. You don't want to try to install rpms that will overlap over ebuilds that you have emerged.

Rpm is provided as a program, so you won't have any trouble, altough I don't know how portage likes rpm'ed programs.
Anyway, are you sure there is no ebuild for the program? Making an own ebuild isn't that hard too (I haven't done it myself, I admit...)

Portage will not be able to manage any programs that are nstalled via RPM (just in case that wasn't clear).

I'm not an RPM user, but I thought there was something that converted RPMs to tgz's (or similar)... might that work? Of course, an ebuild would still need to be made.

The docs are your friend: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-howto.xml :)
