|
I was poking around the changelogs of recently updated packages and I noticed that etcat was added to gentoolkit. Code: | Usage: etcat [ options ] [ action ] [ package ]
Actions:
belongs (-b short option)
Searches the portage for package that owns a specified file.
with an option to restrict the search space. Example:
etcat belongs /usr/bin/gimp media-gfx
etcat belongs /usr/lib/libjpeg.so media-*
etcat belongs /usr/lib/libmpeg.so
changes (-c short option)
Outputs the changelog entry to screen. It is possible to give
a version number along with package name. eg:
etcat changes mozilla
etcat changes mozilla-1.1-r1
etcat changes gkrellm$
size (-s short option)
Outputs the size of all the files used by a particular package.
uses (-u short option)
Outputs all the possible USE variables that it uses. Note,
if the ebuild does not use IUSE, then a hack is employed to
try and guess the use variables used, maybe inaccurate.
versions (-v short options)
Outputs all the ebuild versions available in your portage tree.
How to decode the output:
(M) : Masked Package
(~) : Unstable Masked Package
(I) : Installed Package
Number on the end indicates package SLOT. |

I filed a bug where the short options for etcat would just list its usage rather than doing the same as the full options. This is now fixed and short options are now working in the updated version. I agree that etcat is an excellent utility although I don't understand why there is qpkg, portage and etcat all with a large degree of overlap in what they do. I say merge the functionality and make one formidable tool! Is that worth an enhancement bug do you think? _________________ http://dhruba.name/ |

You are correct. I think the existence of three programs instead of one is due to growing pains. That part of the emerge code is kind of murky. I think people found it easier to start over. We do need an emerge 2.0. Any volunteers? _________________ After Perl everything else is just assembly language. |
