I just finished intalling gentoo and I don't have the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
is there a place I can copy this file from and stick in that folder? I've emerged both xorg-x11 and gnome so I'm not exactly sure why that file isn't in there? its always been there before so I'm a little confused?!

It's probably only /etc/X11/xorg.conf.example which is provided in basic instalation of xorg. You can either:
- create the file by hand.
- use xorgconfig and save the results in /etc/X11/xorg.conf |

for ati graphic cards, like my x700 card just to this in a bash shell:
emerge ati-drivers
then select a basic 640, 480 resolution, 8 bit, vga via xorgconfig
run aticonfig ( you get this by emerging ati-drivers)
then should everthiny work, if you reboot
then xdm, or gdm or kdm, depends on your x server what you use.
there are also nvidia-sources like them i descriped for ati, look at packages.gentoo.org via a browser |
