that looks like it was from dec. 2005... I dunno. he is already back in to the Gentoo ranks, even if not officially nor anywhere near his old post.

seems like a very unproductive way to have spent the year 2006.

OK, didn't know that. Although the article says he set up the gentoo foundation (does this own gentoo?) so he can't have gone far `officially'.

Well, one lives and learns; how he ever thought M$ were going to help him, I don't know.

He was over $15K in debt when he left. You can't fault him for trying to get out of the hole. The guy has to eat.

I didn't know that, and no I don't fault him for wanting to sort that out.

I still think he was naive to swallow the M$ line tho. Still, rather enthusiastic naivete than lacklustre cynicism.

Robbins did what he thought was the best thing to do, just like every other bright mind working at Microsoft. He was trying to help things between OSS in general and Microsoft, which is why he was working there for Bill Hilf. Unfortunately things didn't go very well for him, he felt he was being underutilized, so he left.

I support him in his decisions, especially considering all that debt. I just hope that he's managed to get himself back on track completely, he's an excellent developer and writer, and I don't know what I'd do without my Gentoo system he got started back in the day. You can find his blog here.

Blimey do you work for M$? Every bright mind there is just doing what they think is best? Yeah, right.
As for helping things between OSS and Microsoft, that's even more naive, IMO. M$ has appropriated everything it can get its hands on.

I respect your loyalty, and I've never met the guy, so please don't take anything as a personal comment about him (or you).

Are you saying that the bright minds that Microsoft does employ aren't working there because they think it's a good idea? I'm not saying I like what the company does, but it treats it's employees very well and pays plenty. I think you misunderstood what I meant.

And no, I don't work for Microsoft, but if I had the chance to, you bet your ass I would. Then again I'd say the same thing for a company like IBM or Novell, anything like that, because it pays the bills. Certainly moreso than the job I'm hoping to be starting here soon pays.

No I'm saying that they're not "trying to do what's best." They're just trying to make as money as possible, which isn't the same thing.

That's a pretty shallow outlook on other people trying to make a living.

jesus christ you are behind the times, there was a thread about this on the forums 6 months before that article existed, 18 months ago:

Hey, at least he didn't go work for SCO. He did a lot of good when he was here, and did himself in financially. You can't fault him for wanting to be financially solvent. Are your morals so high that you'd turn down a lucrative job from Microsoft if it paid twice what you're making now? Seriously, old news.
