Ever needed a quick .doc to plain text conversion (or just wanted to read a word document without firing up AbiWord/OO.o Writer)? I recently learned about a nifty app called antiword (it's cli) that allows you to do this. Just emerge antiword and fire it up.

The syntax is
Code:
antiword <document>

Just redirect the antiword output to a file (antiword moo.doc > moo.txt) or pipe it through less/more/most to read a word document quickly (antiword moo.doc | less/more/most)

It's handy. There is also another app, unrtf, which is about the same thing for .rtf documents.

And there is 'catdoc' as well. For .xls try 'xlhtml'.
