I went to install Gentoo and found stage 1 and 2 are no longer supported. Isn't this part of the whole Gentoo experience, to build the OS from scratch. I am dissapointed.

Part of the whole Gentoo experience is also searching before you ask questions.

afaik stage1 and stage2 are still on the mirrors, but they are not included in the documentation. nevertheless the way to install gentoo using a stage[12] is documented in faq. so your poll is imho senseless. ;)

(please correct me if i am false)

EvilEye,

Supported in this context means you won't get a gread deal of help if you do a stge 1 and it doesn't go smoothly.
Stage 1 and stage 2 and still made and distributed. The install guide has been relegated to the FAQ as not much more than a curiosity.

Stage 1 has some drawbacks, some circular dependancies are resolved by leaving packages out of the system list, so even though you have them, portage doesn't know. Stage 3 fixes this.

Better, is using the stage 3 tarball to do the satge 1 install steps. There has been a lot written about it on the forums over the years, including some in depth analysis. A stage 3 install takes away many opportunities to mess up without dropping the performace much at all.

Gentoo has not taken away your freedom or choice to do stage 1 or stage 2 installs, its just discouraged.
However, even that is arch dependant - some arches still only have stage 1.

You are still able to perform a Stage 1 or 2 install (my current one was built from 1), but it isn't documented anymore.

Personally, I think that Stage 2 should be eliminated.

Bring back Stage 1!

Edit: I realize you can stage 3 and then simply emerge -e world, but I am all about stage 1.

Please see the giant discussion about it here: What exactly happened to stage 1? And bootstrapping?
