ZX2C4 Instant Messenger is a revolutionary free instant messenger aimed at the small business or just the average user aiming to set up his own IM server and client. A public server is available for use with the downloadable client as well as a free server program for users to run their own servers. The program features tabbed instant messaging, advanced file transfers, and IM logging.

I wrote this peice of software in C#, originally 1.0, then 1.1, and now I'm converting to 2.0. I've used alot of API calls, so linux capibility with mono is going slowly. I have successfully ported the server component to mono and am running it on a linux box. What do you think of ZIM?

http://chat.jasondonenfeld.com is the product page (hosted on a home linux server, so it might be a little bit slow becuase I have slow upload rates from my isp).

This is on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX2C4_Instant_Messenger

Yeah. There are probably some legal problems with putting that there.

You have to check the check box before signing up, and press "I agree" before installing. You have to continue accessing the site to get to the download page. Putting the last point aside, the only room for damage is if NSIS (http://nsis.sf.net) messes up the system before they get to the second step in the "wizard".

Probably?? there's nothing probable about it. Your license is invalidated by the fact that you cannot read it before agreeing..

IANAL but honestly if your software works half as well as your license you are in deep shit.

Amen to that brother.

By the way, your product isn't marketable. Why? Because something called Jabber exists. If some company needs an IM program, Jabber is what they'll probably end up using. You can't make profit by reinventing the wheel. We already have 7,000 IM variants and only a handful are worth looking at. Jabber works when you have a stable server / network, and look at what Google did with it in GTalk -- video / audio support! (I think video.. I dont use it though, so this is from memory)

Do something with IM that has never been done with IM before. Perhaps throw in some unique collaborative features?

It looks nice! I like how you did the log viewer that shows you the logs with all the text formated and everything!

Thank you.

The best feature of ZIM is it's extremely easy file transferring. All files are compressed on the fly and no firewall setup is necessary. In addition, you can paste screenshots and images right into the message, which will be attached as a file.

Also-- you guys really aught to try out zim.

Personally while Jabber is a good idea I found that dealing with existing protocols like msn, yahoo, etc was too much of a hassle coupled with the fact that the clients all sucked. Glancing at Zim I would second the suggestion to include collaborative features in the program to set it apart from the rest of the IM clients out there.

Good on you for writing the software. I'm sure it really is quite nice.

But I won't be using it (ignoring the fact there's no Linux version yet) because I don't know anyone using it - this is the biggest problem you're going to face. I find Jabber bad enough because the massive majority of my contacts are on MSN, but at least with Jabber I can talk to them with the same IM client.

I'll join the comments on your disclaimer too; the link goes to a license agreement for your software. IANAL either, but I can't see how you could remotely enforce a contract like that just because someone viewed your website. By the time I can see the notice you're telling me I've already agreed to it - except of course I haven't done anything to agree...
You might like to have another crack at spelling "MELLITIOUS" too.

Not exactly revolutionary. I'm sure your product is quite good and you learned a lot while writing it, but I don't need yet another IM client which is not compatible with any existing protocol.

Good on you for writing it.

IM software isn't very useful for me, so I won't be trying it out. But you really should have considered developing useful extensions for already existing clients rather than reinventing the wheel.

Anyway, I hope you can at least make it popular among your own circle of friends, if not Gentoo users.

I haven't Tried ZIM, but from reading the website you should really consider incorporating Cross site compatibility with the Jabber Protocol, Even if internally you use something else without cross site support you would never reach the critical mass needed to get off the ground.

Also if you could make It so multiple people could have a document/source code/Slide Show open and edit it while chatting in a ZIM window that would rock. Then you could integrate it with a SVN repo for easy version control.
