I'm trying to do an upgrade to gcc 4.1.1, but I'm not certain how I'm supposed to set the CHOST. It's currently set to be i386-pc-linux-gnu, and I get an error saying it needs to be changed to 486 or later. If I perform a gcc-config-l, I get the following:

Code:

daiakuji / # gcc-config -l
 [1] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5 *
 [2] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5-hardened
 [3] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5-hardenednopie
 [4] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5-hardenednopiessp
 [5] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5-hardenednossp
 [6] i386-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.1

So 686 (which seems to be the recommended) isn't an option. It's currently set to be i386 in make.conf as well:

Code:

CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=i686 -pipe"
CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
PORTAGE_NICENESS="18"

My machine is an AMD Athlon, and uname seems to suggest i686 will be the right choice:

Code:

Linux daiakuji 2.6.15-vs2.0.1-gentoo-r5 #2 SMP Sat Jun 10 10:50:19 BST 2006 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) MP 1800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

The question is, am I right in wanting i686, and if so, how do I get the system to recognise i686 as a valid CHOST option? I've been reading through the various gcc upgrade guides, but none seem to say what to do if gcc-config doesn't recognise anything above i386.

Finally, this is a virtual server (as in I'm running the Virtual Servers kernel, see uname above). Can I upgrade this virtual machine without touching the kernel? I've got several virtual servers running and this is a spare one I'd like to initially test the upgrade on. Is this possible, or am I going to have to rebuild the host server+kernel first?

Consult the Changing the CHOST guide, spawned from the topic 'Weird CHOST settings causing compile mixup - Changing CHOST'.
