Hey all,

I was just wondering how everyone backs up their installs. I have been tar'ing up my root drive which seems to work alright, but I was wondering if there was maybea better way of backing up either an entire partition, or an entire drive (including mbr) within gentoo.

i think tarring up things the way they're installed is pretty much the best and easiest way. i think there even were some scripts that did exactly that, check the "documentation, tips & tricks" forum for a "stage4 howto".

aside from that method, you could also use dd in combination with bz2. that would make exact images of your harddrive (or partition, whatever you set it loose on), but it would obviously require a lot more space.

RaceTM,

I don't backup my install - The install can be recreated overnight from sources.

You need to backup /home - thats were all your preicious user data is.

In addition to my /home/ folders I make sure to keep a copy of my .config and /etc/portage/package.* files someplace off my HDD.
