Hi.

After updating my system including glibc(2.4-r3) ,gcc(4.1.1), pam-login -> shadow(4.0.15-r2), I can't anymore log in to my system.
I can get into machine in single mode, go to runlevel 2 or 3 and everything works(including login command). But when directly booting
up system login just times out totally ignoring password.

Does anyone have any clues how to fix this?
Some configuration error in baselayout, sysvinit ?

ps it's amd64 system

Did You do the etc-update after emerging? Probably something in /etc/pam.d has changed and needs to be configured now.

Sure I did, but maybe I wasn't careful and made an illogical choice...

you can (and probably should) install pam and shadow at the same time now.

Hi.

pam was installed all the time ofcourse.
Or did you mean pam-login.

Anyway now logging in functions after tons of chaotic actions like
rebooting windows-style
emerge -C shadow pam
and reinstalling shadow, pam, baselayout. several times;)

I don't even know when it was fixed at last, now there's a new problem
can't log in through gdm but I think I'm going to find solution for this in forums;)

Reboot, reinstall gdm, reboot and it doesn't work anymore.
Login just times out - /var/log/pwdfail/current

[login] FAILED LOGIN (1) on `tty1' FOR `UNKNOWN', Authentication
failure

everything including gdm work perfect in single mode

marked shadow and util-linux ~amd64 and upgraded.
Nothing changed, but noticed a new feature.

When I boot up my computer and try to log in to Gdm session,
gdm hangs and I can't log in even through console(login times out)
(sth. bad happens with pam/some module overrides sth?).
When I first log in as root from console, then I have no problem to
log in to gdm also.

Strange, maybe I'm just VERY tired and can't find and define the real
problem.

Had the same problem today. It turned out to be the old pam-login / shadow conflict. I removed pam-login and re-emerged shadow in a chroot environment.
