Possibly it's a stupid question but...

is possible preserve uptime?

I have a server with 300 days of uptime, I need to reboot it now to build a new kernel.

Sorry but, by definition, uptime is how long the system has been up without a reboot....

Ya, no cheating!

This raises a curious question: if you use kexec to change running kernels, does this reset the uptime? (basically is uptime for the machine, or the running kernel)

No certainty from me, but I think uptime is a counter incremented each second by the kernel, and so when you start a new kernel, the uptime is reset, too.

Well, you can change the start value by hacking the kernel.

Nice, I tried to do this a while ago but couldn't figure it out.

Funny though, I'm glad I'm not the only one trying to defeat the purpose of uptime :)

See sig.

While it's not faked, it's not from my system either ;) (rather from one of the sun boxes at $ORKPLACE).

You could try out app-misc/uptimed, it doesn't preserve your uptime but it does keep track of your highest uptimes.
