I've got a box that someone installed from a very old installation medium and when they did it they set the CHOST to i386. I would like to switch to i686 so that I can use NPTL (glibc-2.4 and gcc-4.1.1) and because it seems silly to have the machine running with a i386 CHOST when it's got a Pentium D processor.

Reinstalling from scratch is out of the question: this box is 250 miles away.

I've already switched to the latest server profile (/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.1/server) and I just need to know what to do next to get the system switched to i686.

Here is my make.conf
Code:

CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j4"
FEATURES="ccache"
PORTAGE_NICENESS="15"

USE="-alsa -apache2 -arts -esd -mesa -motif -mp3 nptl nptlonly -opengl -oss postgres -vorbis -X -xv"

SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

Also, here is the output of gcc-config --list-profiles
Code:
[1] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6 *
 [2] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardened
 [3] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardenednopie
 [4] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardenednopiessp
 [5] i386-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardenednossp
 [6] i386-pc-linux-gnu-4.1.1

I imagine that the first step is to install the correct compiler profiles, then switch to it using gcc-config, then update make.conf, but I'm slightly confused about how to take the first step. Thanks in advance.
