This afternoon i received a email from a misterious person asking me if i could help out on there Gentoo server for their business. This guy said he found me on the "Gentoo list" witch I'm guessing is here on the forums. I thought this was sort of weird since nothing like this happened to me or anyone I know. He sounded like he needed someone fast and as I live in Oklahoma currently I'm sure there are not a whole lot of Gentoo Administrators around here.
Has anyone heard of this happaning or ever landed a job this same way? |

My college, FSU, has some gentoo boxes over in IT, I was speeking to the local admin about the speed and their supposed "filesharing" filter when it decided to target some downloads with .tar.gz, needless to say they were a little freaked that I managed to get their emails _________________ My Systems - "I suggest the whole thing be coded in whitespace. I nce got a job because of posting in a ms-windows.programming newsgroup on usenet.
This was my first freelance job.
But it's been a while. More than 10 years to be exact.

I got the job I have now by answering peoples' questions on a c++ message board. That was 7 years ago. |

No im not. Or i wasn't anyway.
So i called the guy and talked to him and what not. He was going to send me a e-mail with all the problems he was having on his server, the office address and the time to be down there but he never e-mailed me back... I was going to be down there yesterday. Phhft go figure. Ohyeah I did a whois the webpage and the name that came up was the same guy that emailed me, apparently he lives in Beverly Hills, CA. Fancy. |

Your forum profile probably has your email address in it.
Like some kid periodically sends me messages on AIM (when I actually log on through gaim), asking me random linux-related questions to help him get his apache server going. Thing is, he almost always forgets that I haven't done any web development ever.
For a while, he was trying to convince me that his online store he put up for custom computers was gonna take down dell. I, politely, tried telling him that he was full of crap. He never believed me. His entire argument was "Dell's $500 computers have about $200 worth of parts. I'll sell similar stuff @ $300. I'll undercut them."
He didn't understand the idea of a name brand and that most of the people buying from dell want stuff like customer support (which obviously can't be done by one 15 year old kid). Or that a the sheer volume of dell's sales would make up for the few people who bought from him.
Oh well. |

Shortly after, he realized I was right.
His attempt to take down Dell is like doing a DOS attack on MS w/ 1 computer doing a ping. |

Of course, some people make it. But generally speaking you have to have a better vision than "I'll undercut the other guy."
Take Dell. They have grown because they started out with something hardly anyone had tried before: customizable computers. And then they continued growing because they offered (at least at first) good customer service.
All this kid had was "I'm gonna do what Dell does but cheaper... and worse." Not exactly a winning idea. |
