I finally did a manual install and got a semi-working system. I have to mount some of my partitions manually, and the network interface. But now I have done something that has messed up emerge. When I try any emerge command, I get the following:

Performing Global Updates: /usr/portage/profiles/updates/3Q-2006
(Could take a couple of minutes if you have a lot of binary packages.)
.='update pass' *='binary update' @='/var/db move'
s='/var/db SLOT move' S='binary SLOT move' p='update /etc/portage/package.*'

File "/usr/lib/portage/pym/portage_util.py", line 696, in close
os.rename(self.name, self._real_name)
OSError: [Errno 16] Device or resource busy

Can I get back to finish the installation of all the packages needed to complete the install? :?

Try to resync (emerge --sync), if that fails see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147010
The tail of those posts indicates that the patch at https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=96616&action=view
seems to work. Download the patch, save it to /tmp/update_config.patch, and then try
Code:
# cd /usr/lib/portage
# patch -p0 < /tmp/update_config.patch
Then try emerge --sync again.

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Other Things Gentoo.
Not about getting gentoo installed, so moved here.
