Hi all,

Despite the attempt of reemerging the entire packages (emerge world), I still get a weird X error saying that it can't load module "bitmap" and "pcidata". I have no idea why this happens. This happens when I migrated an old computer (Pentium 3-933MHz) from a monolithic X11 server to a modular one. The monolithic server worked, but the newly compiled one bombed.

Below is the error message:

Code:

Any ideas why this happened? Thanks :)

Here
Code:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3384 Sep  9 19:47 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/fonts/libbitmap.so*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 311760 Sep  9 19:47 /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libpcidata.so*
and
Code:
$ equery belongs /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libpcidata.so
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libpcidata.so in *... ]
x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libpcidata.so)
$ equery belongs /usr/lib/xorg/modules/fonts/libbitmap.so
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/lib/xorg/modules/fonts/libbitmap.so in *... ]
x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/fonts/libbitmap.so)
perhaps you would like to see if these two files exist.

If they don't, you could try emerge'ng x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 again or
Code:
$ equery check x11-base/xorg-server
[ Checking x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.2-r7 ]
!!! Failed to calculate MD5 sum for /usr/bin/Xorg
 * 309 out of 310 files good
Looks like I've got problems too!

Hi Wynn. Thanks for your reply. But both libbitmap.so and libpcidata.so exist at the same places as yours. And then:

Code:
equery check x11-base/xorg-server
[ Checking x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1 ]
 * 1235 out of 1235 files good

I don't know what to do. I already reemerge world, but it still fails to load the xorg.

Hi

Try checking the line that reads ModulePath in your xorg.conf. It's under the section "Files" I'll bet it's pointing to the wrong place as the xorg chappies moved a few folders around when they modularised it. (Cripes I hate that word)

HTH

Nick :wink:

Code:

(**) ModulePath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
nick_warrington is right! I missed it. These should be
Code:
(==) RgbPath set to "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
(==) ModulePath set to "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
