Hello,

I just finished installing Gentoo 2006 with Kernel 2.6.17-RC8, with Grub so I could boot my Windows as well. Grub and Windows are working fine, I can access Windows without any trouble but there's no way to fully boot on Gentoo, here's what I get after selecting the Gentoo option from the Grub menu:

Quote:

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda4" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

here is my partition table
Quote:
default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

# Gentoo
title=Gentoo
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-rc8 root=/dev/hda4

# Windows
title=Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

and here is my grub.conf
Quote:
Device Boot ID System
/dev/hda1 * C W95 Fat32 (LBA)
/dev/hda2 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda4 83 Linux

I've followed the Gentoo Handbook[/b]. From what I understand there's something wrong with the root partition or the mounting process. Somehow it appears that my hda4 is ext2fs, can it be that it's in ext2 instead of ext3 ?

if your root partition is /dev/hda4 root should be (hd0,3)

you might also need support for ext3 and your ide chipset in the kernel.

You may find more help in [FAQ] KC13: I just installed a new kernel and it won't boot
