now that I have at least one working gentoo (A), installing it on another machine (B) is like:
- boot livecd on B
- fdisk hd
- mount correct layout
- link A and B via eth
- raise eth0 on B
- create some nfs of / on A or B and mount on the other (didn't try setting up a rsync server)
- rsync -a from A to B, maybe with some excludes (like /dev, /proc, maybe /home) (rsyncing, even over nfs has numerous advantages: resuming, checking for corruption, etc...)
- chroot on B
- grub
- reboot w/o livecd
- maybe: tweak some conf, remove some packages, build others, tweak the kernel.

voila, a readily upgraded (up to A at least) system, in no time. others take ~15min.
the longest part is rsyncing, which is non-interactive. and configuration in the end, but that's a 'special' step.

of course, A must be either similar to B, or not too aggressive cflags must be used.

Anyone has some other, quick-install ideas?

This is certainly not a bad idea, but will fail if machine B doesn't support the CFLAGS you compiled with on machine A, e.g. machine A is a Pentium4 with --march=pentium4 and machine B is an Athlon XP (lacks SSE2 i.e.). Also don't forget that you will most probably need to rebuild your kernel as well as edit important system configuration, hostname, passwords, ethernet configuration etc.
