When you are updating 500 odd packages, get to package 470/500 and think:
"Cool, I can play that game I just bought in the sale soon, yay."
then package 471 is qtwebengine so you go to the pub instead.

There must be other (jocular) "Just Gentoo things..." out there, I just can't think of any right now...

I can see my future, it involves a confused barman, more pints and a bigger tab.

Anyone have a "Your updates just finished successfully, time to come home and play games!" email wrapper for emerge? It's a 20 minute round trip to the pub, that's 20 minutes I'll never get back!

NichtDerHans,

The forums do not support [img] tags. The bare link will work, as will [url=<link>]Text[/url]

under-par stuff for Neddy

For relative newbies, I'd like to introduce Neddy "Grandfather* of the Gentoo Forums" Seagoon, or Neddy "The maintainer of the Gentoo based distro I liked to use had to sign an exclusive dev contract for employment reasons, so I ported her entire back catalogue of ebuilds into the official portage tree, because I'm Just Gentoo things Neddy" Seagoon.

Now, I'd expect, of all people, Neddy would have some of the funniest and most poignant "Just Gentoo things..." offerings, but instead he resorts to calling me, and the forum admins, unspeakable words.

Grandpa has left me bereft, Alzheimer's is a hell of a condition?
Lets all pray for Neddy:
A Prayer for Neddy wrote:
Our Lord,
Who art in Heaven,
Please grant Neddy the strength to find his sense of humour.
Oft obfuscated by his unerring sense of duty to spread his ostensibly infinite knowledge and wisdom regarding Gentoo related matters.
May he bring smiles to the faces of all Gentoo Forum denizens, not just the masses for whom their problems were, in his beneficent posts, [solved].

Amen

*As much as this might sound like a joke, or a jab, at Neddy's expense, if 'Grandfather of the Forums' was an official title, and someone tried to propose anyone other than Neddy for it, on my honour I would literally fight you!

P.S. The prayer is real too, and he deserves it. I'll fight you over that point too, if I must!

Ralphred,

I suppose that funroll-loops counts.
Especially the last image. :)

There there is my "Because I can" collection, my favourite is Historical Gentoo with root in LVM without an initrd or static /dev in a ties for runner up.
The link is to a real live 21 year old Gentoo, that you can download or install yourself ... because I can :)

Alzheimer's ? I don't think so. :)
I'm only 70.

There is a wonderful topic in OTW too. Maybe I'll exhume it for Gentoo Chat.

When you forgot to check that KDE box to avoid having the computer go to suspend and think for a while it compiles big fat packages as firefox, thunderbird, a lot of qt stuff.

Then you get back to your Gentoo: «Shit».

---

When you think your -jX is properly set and suddenly the system goes *BRRRRRRR* and you panic to find that terminal and type CTRL^Z to avoid a crash.

Ooh, I can help with this one; set up an "Updating" activity with a different energy management profile, wallpaper and desktop shortcuts. Obviously the wallpaper and shortcuts aren't necessary, but it will get you used to the idea of using that activity.

Going to bed after setting things going for an overnight build, and in the morning finding ...

  • the system is sat at the "Would you like to merge these packages?" prompt
  • the updates died partway through because when you turned the lights off you also turned off the power brick, and the laptop ran out of juice before running out of builds
  • the update hung after the first package because you shut down the PC with the shared distfiles

:(

Not a bad idea, but not enough to me.

Last night I left it recompile whole tree (as the last step of switch to 23.0 profile) and my wife woke me up in the middle of night:

- I think something is wrong with your computer...
- Why?
- It sounds like it is going to launch itself to space.

And invariably it emerges simultaneously with the heavies packages!

Getting warning every morning:

Code:

And it’s ok.

Kek this is so true.
Anyyone else too lazy to actually install a new kernel when you update and see sys-kernel/gentoo-sources in the packages that you are emerging?

>>> Emerging (2 of 243) sys-libs/glibc-2.38-r11::gentoo

This is the price I have to pay now after forgetting to update for a while.

Hopefully someone will correct me if this is a bad idea (I've been doing it a lot recently, haven't noticed any strange results yet)...
but you can just CTRL+Z to suspend the emerge process, play the video game, and then resume emerge with:
Code:

A ~1hr update turning into a 5hr update as portage trudges through 404 after 404 trying to find Go dependencies to build an update for OpenSnitch.

Yesterday before going to bed, updated gentoo-kernel from stable to unstable 6.8.4.
Now get back in office, emerge --sync and see 6.8.5 arrived :D
Code:
 * sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel

     Mon Apr  8 13:28:01 2024 >>> sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-6.6.21
merge time: 1 hour, 33 minutes and 57 seconds.

     Thu Apr 11 23:03:54 2024 >>> sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-6.8.4
merge time: 1 hour, 43 minutes and 1 second.

A variation of this is having a system that's currently running kernel x.y.z, but since then you've emerged kernels x.y.z+1, z+2, z+3, ..., compiled each one of them, copied the kernel to /boot, installed the respective modules, but still haven't rebooted yet because shit just works fine anyways.

Yeah, there needs to be something useful in the commits before I even update the package.mask >[current kernel] line. With the notable exception of 6.8.2 (can I haz finished p-state driver plz), this usually means the z in x.y.z being double digits too.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but if you have an Intel processor, you now need 6.8.6!
