Hello,
I've found a beautiful sun blade 100 and I'm trying to install gentoo on it, without any succes.
At first, I've tried to make an installation over tftp. My sun request an ip, get it (it answers to arp request) but seems to hang at the time where it should contact the tftp server. I've found a link saying me that the tftp method won't work with an OpenBoot PROM in version 4.17. I've got a 4.17 version. (http://gentoo-wiki.com/Sun_blade).
After that I've tried an installation with the Gentoo's minimal installation CD for sparc 64 without any success. The sun reboot, the cd driver begins to read the CD and BANG, all the machine restarts. I've found another link (http://040.digital-bless.com/texts/Unofficial_Sun_Blade_100_FAQ.htm#file_36) that's saying that with some cd drivers it won't work (mine is an old hp cd RW). I've no other cd drivers available.
Finally, I'm not able to boot the installed system. It's looking for a server and won't stop to do that to continue. And I don't have the root password of the old install.
What could I try? Does somebody have any idea?
Thanks a lot for your help

When I installed my blade I had to remove the extra ati graphics card as that wasn't supported and open prom wanted to use it as the main display.
As for the cd I know on 2006.0 that you had to add ide=nodma when loading the minimal install on the blade 100
eg. press stop-a
boot cdrom
gentoo-2.4 ide=nodma
i think if you type help before the last line it tells you about known bugs.
Good luck.
p.s. 2006.0 definatly works on a blade 100 with a 2.4 kernel I've not tried anything else myself. |
