iptables with windows clients doing vpn+netmeeting

I recently installed Gentoo and have had mostly very positive experiences with it. I compiled in kernel modules for iptables and enabled ip masq. It all seems to work well in that my windows clients can do things like surf the web, irc, im and all that good stuff.

The one thing that is not working so well is when I connect to the office with an XP VPN connection through the Gentoo router. I then use netmeeting to remote control my desktop. So far so good (it's doing what it's supposed to). The kicker happens when you "hangup" the net meeting connection. When that is done it locks up both the remote PC and the Linux box :(

I have to think it is something in the way iptables is set up as I had this working with a little hardware router. I ditched it because it wasn't able to handle heavy loads the way Linux can with 2 nics in it's box.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I doubt that I can help with your issue, but I believe that anyone who could offer you help would need to see how you're setting your iptables rules up. I admit that I have more than a passing interest in seeing how you were able to manage the dynamic port allocation necessary for a successful Netmeeting connection, though!

Its pretty basic. I had this working with Mandrake and Red Hat before. Note that I am just talking about the remote desktop sharing portion of NetMeeting not the videoconferencing type stuff. I use it as it is faster than VNC.

Not to mention that you would likely be violating the Windows XP EULA using VNC  However, there is this: if VNC actually *works* without causing the lockups you're experiencing, perhaps overall it is a wash on the speed - not to mention that you won't have to use a Windows box to perform the remote control. Just a thought, YMMV!

I know this thread is kinda old but if you are still in need for remote desktop control try tightvnc.
You can setup very high compression rates, it's really worth it.
And then it outperforms net meeting by far.

Hope it helps :)
