The new version doesn't start with ffb, will hang your machine anyway without proper configuration (where to find this info?)

But in my case it even blew the hardware:

What did you do to produce this error?

Just booted a 2006.1 live-cd?
Just changed the profile from to 2006.1?
Changed kernel?
Changed grub?

Or multiple of them? (eg. changed profile & world update)

grub is currently a x86 only thing (in either 32 or 64 bit form).

in order to boot I had to to switch to built-in ATI because the new 2006.1 does not recognize the Creator ffb,
When I could boot with the ATI I had the respawning error and I let it stay for a while while trying in other ways.
Then it was not possible to boot the machine again....
Coincidence...Hope so....
Now the machine is working but I plugged out my PCI devices.

Hmmm,

Just downloaded the new release, and my Ultra 10 hung with both of the 2.6 options. I tried it late last night, so no other testing was done. I think my card is Creator, too.

Cheers,

Chris.

(BTW, Is there a built in card in addition to the Creator?)

As far as I know, the Creator series card was never an onboard chipset in any of the 64 bit SPARC machines (at least the Sun ones). If your Ultra 10 is labeled as a Creator 3D model, it's probably because it has a Creator 3D UPA card. The onboard VGA chipset in an Ultra 10 will be the ATI Mach 64 based chipset.

I tested the 2006.1 release media locally (before the release) with a Creator 3D in an Ultra 60, which worked fine for me. However the Ultra 60 does not have an onboard video chipset.

Hi,

My dmesg from Debian Sarge says:

fb0= Creator

fb1= ATY Mach64 on PCI

I currently have the monitor running from the (13W3?) Sun type connector.

Can I use any PCI video card in the Ultra?

Cheers,

Chris.

Nope, you can't use any video card since most of them require proper (and x86) BIOS initialization, even in linux.
A good bet since it's got quasi-good kernel drivers are old (Millenium, Millenium2, G100, G200) Matrox cards - they also work great with Xorg.
With respect to the Creator not being recognized it's quite possible the kernel is picking up the ATI as default. There are kernel options to change this behaviour, properly (i hope!) documented in the "video" livecd option before booting.

I ran into the same problem trying to boot with a 2.6 kernel on my ultra 10.
(Started out with a 2.4 kernel of the netboot image, but the kernel was too old to chroot with)
I had to remove the creator 3d card so that the onboard ati could be used, and for me that solved the problem.
