(nautilus:6770): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

(nautilus:6770): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Failed to open session DBUS connection: Unable to determine the address of the message bus (try 'man dbus-launch' and 'man dbus-daemon' for help)
Volume monitoring will not work.

(bug-buddy:6774): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:

Probably gnome-base/gail got upgraded after you emerged evolution. I would try to re-emerge evolution to build against the new library.

Well, as far as dbus is concerned make sure you have emerged dbus and hald, then do /etc/init.d/dbus start and /etc/init.d/hald start.

i had to copy /usr/include/dbus-1.0/dbus to /usr/include/dbus and gnome-applets compiled fine, I did this after unmasking the dbus stuff as well.

I am using sys-apps/dbus-0.62 ... that is the current right, i unmasked it..... i am trying dizzutch's suggestion and it seems like it's working a little bit better.. both dbus and hald are started through init.d and running..... nautlus still won't work. lol

edit: you the man!!!

nautilus still gives me this when i try to run it from the command line.. it complains about dbus not working... F!

Code:

you might need to recompile nautilus against the new dbus running
Code:

revdep-rebuild --library=libdbus-1.so.2

will probably do the trick.

Put this in your.xinitrc file:

Then run startx to run gnome.

If you don't want to overwrite your existing gnome you can use 'garnome' to install gnome 2.16.0.
It worked for me on an AMD64 gentoo machine, with almost no bugs at all. I only had to download some files, that couldn't be found by the script.

When you want to remove gnome 2.16.0, the only thing that you have to do is delete the map 'garnome'.
And when gnome 2.16.0 is in portage you can install it again. Yeah!

I built 2.16 last night and have been playing with it all day. Everything built without any errors of any kind. Sweet! The speedup in overall startup time and Nautilus startup is very noticeable. Great job Gnome team!

I tried to get the metacity built-in compositor to work with AIGLX but all I get is a blue screen with fat ugly black borders (shadows) around all the solid blue windows. I have a feeling it would work if I installed Xgl but my last experience with compiz wasn't good so I'll skip it for now. Hopefully Xorg will have the missing extension in 7.2 (I didn't feel like messing with xorg CVS so this may already be fixed).

In the meantime, xcompmgr works beautifully with this radeon card, the FOSS driver with EXA acceleration (XAA was sloooooooooooooow) and only 32M of video RAM. The only slowdown is switching between desktops but it's only a 2 second delay and I can live with it. This is a HUGE improvement over the last time I tried xcompmgr. Last time it was so slow it made my desktop totally unusable. Even transparency with transset seems to work very smoothly compared to the last time I tried it. It does slow down a bit when I resize or move a transparent window but not enough to make it unusable.

The drop-shadows and menu fade effects are all I really want and they both work excellently. I can live without the wobbly windows and the cube (OK, I do like the cube but I can live without it for now).

I had the same problem. I managed to install it manually by doing the following, Really cant wait to see what 2.16 looks like
on my computer.
Code:

cd /var/tmp/portage/pygobject-2.12.1/work/pygobject-2.12.1/
 ./configure
make
ebuild /usr/portage/dev-python/pygobject/pygobject-2.12.1.ebuild install
ebuild /usr/portage/dev-python/pygobject/pygobject-2.12.1.ebuild qmerge

Certainly a stupid question,

but why on earth does gnome-base/gnome-session-2.16.0 or gnome-base/control-center-2.16.0 need x11-base/xorg-x11-7-2.1.2 !!! It isn't in portage after all ! Is it ?

How did you manage to install gnome 2.16 without breaking the dependencies then ? Did you spell some guru's invocations or anything ? ;)

I didn't find anything useful related with xorg-x11 in the ebuilds :(
