Recent trends in Gentoo herd are to use a "Codename" along with version number of a newly relesed software. "Fight the Power", "Owning the small guys" from CONRAD, "Return to planet Linux", "A New Begining", "Emerging Victorious" from Mission Evolution, "Level of Incompetence", "Robots cannot be evil" from catmur's udept, just to name a few.

Ubuntu and Debian use their own naming conventions but "Codenames" are much more sophisticated and the may have some meaning.

Personally, I like the idea. Do you?

have both 2006.1 is the official release version, but having a 'fun' codename during development cant hurt anyone.

Debian uses characters from "Toy Story", I suggest we use character names from Douglas Adams' books. Can you imagine the look on peoples faces when you tell them that you are using the "Slartibartfast" edition!?!

Edit: How about this for a tagline? "The Slartibartfast Edition of Gentoo was created using Bistromathics."

How about this tagline: Warp 10 on x86, Tiny Litte Life forms on adm64

I say we use Discworld characters. The wizards of the Unseen University could be used for the unstable branches of Gentoo, as the wizards are known for "telling the universe what [they] want it to be like, in terms it can't ignore". Much like our devs with the source.

As for the stable branches, I dunno, the witches? They're known for "smoothing out life's humps and bumps" and "helping people when life's on the edge". Need I say more? Besides, I like the name 'Esme' (Weatherwax) and since she's the leading witch in Lancre (despite the witches having no hierarchy), I think it'd fit well for the flagship arch. :D

Doubt it'll happen, though.

I think we should name them after Dragonlance characters, mainly so the development branch could be Tasslehoff, everyones favorite Kender.. or maybe Raistlin just to indicate the level of evil.

If they did that, they would be the first against the wall when the revolution comes...

This would be good as long as it is prominently displayed in large friendly red letters on the splash screen.

Also, it would need to be slightly cheaper than the leading competition. ;)

If you were a whoopy frood, you would not have needed to change your pants, as you would have had your towel handy for just such an emergency. :D

It seems like old 2006.1 convention is going to win.
I hope we can understand it use both 2006.1 and a codname :)

The other thing we might need to get is a "Spoony Bard" edition.

I am for Douglas Adams or Fight Club (oops, sorry, I've broken the rule ) errr I mean 2006.1 convention

Please remember, non-American users don't know much about StarTrek. I also have no idea neither about Discworld nor about Dragonlance. What are those?

Discworld is absolute love!
It's comparable with the Hitchhikers guide, but with fantasy instead of sciencefiction.

umm, well, I'm non-American and I know about Star-Trek. Imagine that ;) Also, I guess most gentoo users know about Star Trek as well. Like it or not, both our TV channels and our movie theaters are filled with American "culture" (ehem ... 8) )

As for the others, well, I'm not British either but I know about Discworld and Dragonlance as well. Dragonlance may be OK, but not knowing of Discworld (especially if you know about/like Douglas Adams's work) is a pity. Terry Pratchett (as others have noted) is quite on par with Douglas Adams, only in fantasy.

[/off-topic] :D

Maybe get codenames for stable versions form The Guide, and unstables from Discworld :) But then again are there "unstable releases" of Gentoo? 8O (emerging unstable packages does not count, as that's not a "release").
