Hello,

I just have a quick question about the gcc 4 upgrade. In the upgrade guide it says to do:

Code:

# emerge -eav system
# emerge -eav world

After doing an emerge -eav system, and checking which packages are going to be emerged during the emerge -eav world, I noticed that a lot of the packages I emerged during the system are also emerged in the world. I'm just wondering why the duplication? I didn't check package by package, but I assume it's because there are some packages that don't overlap?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi asommer,

As I understand # emerge -e system is a subset of emerge -e world. Basically you need to 1st rebuild your tool chain and then rebuild your core system using the updated base and then rebuild your world so to not have any inconsitencies in yoru packages/system.

So yes, emerge -e world will also include packages already included in emerge -e system.

Hope that explains it, as best I do...

The command "emerge -e" virtually clean your install package.
So when you use "emerge -e world", for the system there is no package installed, so he remerged the complete dependencies
If you want to update your system, rather use
Code:
emerge -uDav world

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Duplicate Threads.

[mod]Moved to duplicates in favour of https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-493662.html - all GCC-4.1 upgrade posts should be made there.[/mod]

grenwald,
please be more careful when answering questions regarding gcc upgrades. If you had read the upgrade guide, you would know that you do need to use the emptytree option to compile every package in your system. Failing to do that, can leave you with an unstable system.
