I built my third gentoo box last week (a home-theater PC), and everything is working great except for one nagging issue.

I've been shutting down and rebooting the system frequently to install hardware and to test initialization of drivers and so forth. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the time, I cannot login after restarting the system. No matter what user I login as, after I enter the password and press enter, the system just sits there for 1 minute, then prints out "Login timed out after 60 seconds" and returns to the login prompt. If I try to login from another machine via ssh, I get the "Connection refused" message. I tried logging in 20-30 times on one occassion before hitting the reset switch.

After the computer reboots, I can usually but not always login. Once I rebooted six or seven times and still could not get in. At that point I put in my minimal install disk, chrooted to my install, looked around a bit, saw nothing wrong in the kernel logs, the boot logs, or dmesg for that matter. So I rebooted w/o the install disk, and then I was able to get into the system. Since then I've run into the problem several times but each time was able to get back in after one or two reboots.

The system isn't exhibiting any other problems. The CPU and hard drive temperatures are stable and stay around 35 degrees Celcius. I've had NO lockups or kernel panics. I don't think I've even had a program segfault yet. I wish I could post some kind of error message, but like I said before, I haven't found any.

I'm using the gentoo-sources kernel, version 2.6.17-r7 with reiserfs and LVM2. boot and / sit on actual partitions, while /usr, /home, /tmp, /var, and /store (for movie and music files) are managed by LVM.

Has anyone ever had this problem? I've struck out searching for similar issues.

I have this problem too - did anyone solve this problem? If anyone encountered similar problem and found a solution - please post it here.

EDIT:
I suppose I found where is a problem - it's metalog and it's console logging feature. Since I disbaled it I can login correctly every time I boot PC.

I have the same problem, and the problem is indeed metalog (installed version = 0.8_rc1-r2).

This has already been reported as bug #144886.

I have the same problem, but... i don't have metalog in my system:
Code:
*  app-admin/metalog
      Latest version available: 0.8_rc1-r2
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of files: 118 kB
      Homepage:      http://metalog.sourceforge.net/
Description:   A highly configurable replacement for syslogd/klogd
      License:       GPL-2

Any idea what to do now?
