Hi, I'm new to gentoo and would like to try out the 32bit platform before trying the 64bit. I have an AMD64. Is it possible to just install the 32bit gentoo as normal or are there any settings that I should know about.
The reason that I'm asking first is because I have to download the iso's and I'd rather save myself the trouble if this won't work.

Thanks in advance.

If I am not mistaken the processor is backward compatible. You can check the Safe CFLAGS page in the wiki for your gentoo configuration.
CFLAGS
Safe CFLAGS to use for Gentoo

You can safely use these to make 32 bit system on a 64bit AMD processor. ther eare more options you possibly could use such as MAKEOPTS="-j3" for dual core chips and adding -msse to your CFLAGS if you chip supports it.
    CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
    CFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
    CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
