Hi there,

a few days ago I got my new system with Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe),

I thought it would be easy to migrate from an nforce2 (a7n8x) to an intel-based system (p5w dh deluxe) but it seems the hardware is too bleeding edge

here my problems:

the JMicron PATA-SATA-Controller isn't working flawlessly in linux (PIO or only UDMA2- mode) in contrast to windows which is running fine with udma5-mode. before that it only ran in PIO-mode: a newer bios-version (1101) solved the problem under windows

Code:
JMB361: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:02:00.0
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:02:00.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
JMB361: chipset revision 2
JMB361: 100% native mode on irq 19
    ide2: BM-DMA at 0x9400-0x9407, BIOS settings: hde:pio, hdf:pio
    ide3: BM-DMA at 0x9408-0x940f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio
Probing IDE interface ide2...
Probing IDE interface ide3...
hdg: WDC WD1600BB-00GUA0, ATA DISK drive
hdh: WDC WD1200BB-00CAA1, ATA DISK drive
ide3 at 0x9800-0x9807,0x9482 on irq 19
Probing IDE interface ide1...
Probing IDE interface ide2...
hdg: max request size: 512KiB
hdg: 312581808 sectors (160041 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=19457/255/63, UDMA(33)
hdg: cache flushes supported
 hdg: hdg4 < hdg5 hdg6 hdg7 >
hdh: max request size: 128KiB
hdh: 234441648 sectors (120034 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=65535/16/63, UDMA(33)
hdh: cache flushes not supported
 hdh: hdh1 hdh2 < hdh5 hdh6 >

and hdparm says:
Code:
PIO modes:  pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes:  mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
 AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
 Drive conforms to: Unspecified:  ATA/ATAPI-1 ATA/ATAPI-2 ATA/ATAPI-3 ATA/ATAPI-4 ATA/ATAPI-5 ATA/ATAPI-6

 * signifies the current active mode

the harddrives behave like if they were on PIO-mode: on heavy copying the CPU-load goes pretty high
although the harddrives support udma 5 and I am using a 80-pin cable :cry:

the interesting part here is:

Quote:
ide2: BM-DMA at 0x9400-0x9407, BIOS settings: hde:pio, hdf:pio
ide3: BM-DMA at 0x9408-0x940f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio

and

Quote:
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2

does this mean the kernel only recognizes udma2 (UDMA 33) :?: 8O

in the bios the jmicron-controller is "enabled" and set to "basic" mode (other options are: AHCI; RAID), since I don't want a raid consisting of a 120 GB and a 160 GB harddrive :roll:
when AHCI is selected, the kernel says something about "100% native mode", linux takes pretty long to boot (I didn't have the nerves to wait so long) I waited for 5-10 minutes and then reset the computer

IDE-Configuration:
"Configure SATA As" is set to "Standard IDE" (other options are: AHCI, RAID)
"Onboard IDE Operate Mode" is set to "Enhanced Mode" (recommended option; other options are: P-ATA + S-ATA, P-ATA)

so the (slow !) and working configuration under linux (which works pretty fine on windows :? ) so far is:

IDE Configuration:
Configure SATA As: Standard IDE
Onboard IDE Operate Mode: Enhanced Mode
Enhanced Mode Support On: S-ATA

JMicron SATA/PATA Controller: Enabled
JMicron Controller Mode: Basic
JMicron SATA/RAID BOOTROM: Enabled / Disabled

I'm running on kernel 2.6.18-rc4-mm1 which is supporting conroe's thermal management

Has someone of you managed to boot off the JMicron-Controller with a LiveCD and CD/DVD-Drive or linux-installation from an IDE-Harddrive?

I have tried the newest Ark Linux Live-CD with kernel 2.6.18-rc* which is pretty bleeding edge, several gentoo live-CDs (kernel 2.6.15 to 2.6.16), some knoppix / kanotix-CDs (2.6.14 or 2.6.15) but wasn't successful: the kernel always hang on the message: "100% native mode ..." (or something similar)

If the controller is set to "AHCI", it reports itself as "JMB363" instead of JMB361 8O

Do you think that is a problem of the bios ? or a kernel-specific issue?

Thanks in advance for your input, opinions and sorry for my strange english :wink:

I remember hearing that the JMicron controller is supported in 2.6.18rc1. I believe rc4 is the current pre-release. You can emerge that kernel with allowed keywords using vanilla-sources. I'm guessing the 2.6.18 will be officially released in the next few weeks.

I just purchased the same exact motherboard as you and an E6600 processor. I will try the 2.6.18rc4 kernel once all the hardware arrives and let you know how it goes.

I've researched on this topic a little bit on the net and got a partial solution:

before I found the solution "dmesg" showed:

Quote:
Speed warnings UDMA 3/4/5 is not functional

when I had used hdparm:
Code:
hdparm -X 69 /dev/hdg

The following setting should fix this:

Add the following line to grub or lilo (for lilo you eventually need to add "append=")

set
Code:
ide2=ata66 ide3=ata66
or
Code:
ide2=autotune ide3=autotune

you could also combine both,

ide2=ata66 is somehow working for me, but kernel says:

Quote:
ide_setup: ide2=ata66 -- OBSOLETE OPTION, WILL BE REMOVED SOON!
ide_setup: ide3=ata66 -- OBSOLETE OPTION, WILL BE REMOVED SOON!

I don't hope that it will be removed too soon:

Code:
 PIO modes:  pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes:  mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
 AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
 Drive conforms to: Unspecified:  ATA/ATAPI-1 ATA/ATAPI-2 ATA/ATAPI-3 ATA/ATAPI-4 ATA/ATAPI-5 ATA/ATAPI-6

 * signifies the current active mode

this applies to both drives :D

Quote:
hdparm -tT /dev/hdg

/dev/hdg:
Timing cached reads: 12228 MB in 2.00 seconds = 6117.36 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 180 MB in 3.01 seconds = 59.87 MB/sec

Quote:
hdparm -tT /dev/hdh

/dev/hdh:
Timing cached reads: 10848 MB in 2.00 seconds = 5427.79 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 138 MB in 3.04 seconds = 45.44 MB/sec

before that it was around 29.9 MB/sec :roll:

to get this result, you have to compile in:
Code:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_JMICRON=y

the <*> JMicron JMB36x support under <*> Generic PCI IDE Chipset Support

and enable:
[*] Use PCI DMA by default when available
[ ] Enable DMA only for disks

@Scin:

thanks, I'm really looking forward to get this system running at 100% of it's potential :)

I haven't tried this option out on the live-CDs but soon ...

Glad to hear you got your HD DMA working.

I noticed that you are using GCC 4.1.1, what CFLAGs are you using? Do you think its worth using 4.1.1? Are you running 64bit or 32bit?

I'm almost tempted to run ICC 9.1, I have a dual Xeon box that had some ridiculas performance gains with MySQL, PHP and other software using the Intel compiler. It is somewhat of a hassle to setup however.

At the moment I'm installing both a 32bit and 64bit-system, then I'll see which runs better

Update:
Since some applications, which I really like / need don't really work on AMD64 (partimage, bmpx, ...), I'll go with ~x86.

my CFLAGS on AMD64 are:
-march=nocona -O2 -pipe
Update:
the progs on AMD64 seem to react pretty fragile to "advanced" cflags, so I stay with those safe cflags

CFLAGS on x86 are little "experimental" :lol:
Code:
-march=nocona -pipe -DNDEBUG -DNO_DEBUG -DG_DISABLE_ASSERT -O2 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -frename-registers -ftracer -fprefetch-loop-arrays -falign-functions=64 -fstrict-aliasing -fno-ident -mfpmath=sse

I wanted to see what was possible, and it works pretty fine

Since what I've read gcc 4.1.1 is pretty stable, especially the auto-vectorization seems promising, although -ftree-vectorize looks tempting, you shouldn't use it yet ...
... I recompiled parts of my system (emerge -e system) and a lot of applications segfaulted, so DON'T USE IT :wink:

perhaps at version 4.2 oder 4.3 it will work perfectly on all apps :P

you should consider that you can't compile the whole system with ICC, but if you gain lot of performance on critical apps with it, you should give it a try :P

I tried the latest Ark Linux Live-Cd with 2.6.18-rc kernel and it worked too with
Code:
ide2=ata66 ide3=ata66

but it takes very much time (approx. 9-10 minutes) to boot, because the kernel hangs at the activation of the JMicron Controller:

I've written down the messages of the kernel, so there can be some typos (which I don't hope):

Code:
JMB361: IDE Controller at pci slot 0000:02:00.0
acpi: pci interrupt 0000:02:00.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 18
JMB361: chipset revision 2
JMB361: 100% native mode on irq 18
JMB361: port 0x01f0 already claimed by ide0
JMB361: port 0x0170 already claimed by ide1
JMB361: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)
hde: max request size: 512 KiB
hde: lost interrupt
....
hde: cache flushed supported

then it shows something with udma 100

That shows that the boot-option of the kernel ideX=ata66 somehow works, but it can't do anything about the slow detection :cry:

oh, I forgot: both drives run in non-raid mode and the boot bios of the controller is disabled (I boot off SATA)

<-- at this time I rebooted (since now it had taken several minutes)

what looks interesting to me is:
Quote:
100% native mode
<== the PATA-devices are being detected, but despite that it doesn't come up properly with libata (?)
Quote:
already claimed by ide0
and
Quote:
already claimed by ide1

and
Quote:
neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)
<== does this mean the BIOS is buggy ?

I tried almost every newer release of the BIOS (til 1101) but none worked so far ... (for windows it does :cry: )

is there a command to selectively disable a ide-driver or sata-driver, e.g. libata at boot on a live-cd ?

Thanks in advance for your input :wink:

Summary:

I tried every 2.6.18-rc*-mm* release so far and
mm-sources 2.6.18-rc4-mm2 & 2.6.18-rc4-mm1 are the only working for me ! <<== you should give it a try :wink:

somehow 2.6.18-rc4-mm3 made it worse again :cry:

now it says:
Quote:
JMB361: Bus-MasterDMA disabled (BIOS)
and
the controller again is running in "AHCI" mode which means, it shows the same behavior as if I had selected the option "AHCI" in the bios,
on 2.6.18-rc4-mm2 it was working fine in "Basic" mode ("Basic" is selected in BIOS and the IDE-ports are being initialized pretty quick)

#########################################################################################

The working configuration for the JMicron Controller so far is (I'm not booting off the Controller, only 2 IDE-HDDs are attached):

with boot-option
Code:
ide2=ata66 ide3=ata66

Update2:
If someone at the moment is on it to create a livecd, would it be possible to add support for no-sources 2.6.18-rc4-no2?
Then I (and probably some others, too) could try, if it works with the JMICRON controller off the CD, too

I'm pretty optimistic though ...
I tried to create one, but failed with patching / creation of the kernel and several other steps (I'll keep on trying ...)

Thanks in advance for your input / help ...

Update:
at the moment I'm trying out vanilla 2.6.18-rc2 again with some other options ...
Update2:
-> kernel panic ! / hang

Hello kernelOfTruth,

I bought a P5B yesterday and am now trying to install gentoo. I can say your livecd works pretty good!
But I'm now looking for a kernel and don't want to run the experimental -mm or -noX releases. Which kernel do you advice? Or should I patch a stable kernel with the jmicron driver?

Would be nice to upload your config and kernel version & patches to site so that others may try to build it

kerneloftruth sources sounds cool ;-)

@Bamboe:
Thanks! :D

stable approach:
You could try out irondog's patch for gentoo-sources,

experimental / mm-sources approach:
however I would try 2.6.18*-branch if you run an Intel Core 2 Duo or other new Hardware due to it's Conroe Thermal support (don't know if it works though ...) + other patches ...
here is the link

ok, this will take some time ...

another release is out: "enhanced small gentoo" (x86)
(this will be my last for x86, since I got lesser and lesser time ...)

it's for those of you, who have problems with the "stable" or "experimental" ones (e.g. CD/DVD-Drive on /dev/hde or /dev/sdg for example)

the original gentoo initrd was replaced by my own, hopefully it'll work well ...

OK, I know, this is "slightly" offtopic, but a new bios for the P5W DH Deluxe is released 1401, which probably fixes some issues with the Jmicron controller (newer ROM ...):

Quote:
P5W DH: 1401

1 Fixed EIST select item is disappeared if used Conroe1066 QPHV 2.93G CPU set ratio to 6X issue.
2 Fixed Kentsfield L2 cache show error issue.
3 Fixed no detect JMicron HDD in Windows XP install screen.
4 Fixed cna't enter crashfree screen when interrupt EZ Flash 2 update bios issue
5 Fixed JMicron JMB36X controller shows with yellow bang in device manager issue
6 Update new JMicron option from 1.06.52 to 1.06.56a version.
7 Fixed CPU Vcore show "Auto" issue.
8 Add CPU "Speedstep" & C1E & "Vcore" note string.
9 Support FSB overclocking to 550MHz.

KernelofTruth. I'm using the libata drivers in MM. These work fast and safely in both IDE and AHCI mode.

Note that I'm not seeing any difference when using the JMicron controller in IDE or AHCI mode. When doing /usr/sbin/lspci nothing changes.

For the other SATA ports there is defenitely a big difference between IDE and AHCI setting (IDE is emulation and AHCI is native sata). When configuring IDE the kernel needs the ata_piix driver for your sata disks and when using AHCI the kernel needs the sata_ahci driver. The /usr/sbin/lspci output also changes.

Thanks, irondog

I'm going to give it a try, which kernel version of MM are you using?

What have you set up in your BIOS ? Which board ?

Thanks in advance :D

Update:

I now tried out 2.6.18-rc7-mm1 with all settings I can think of:

* JMicron-IDE + JMicron-ROM activated / deactivated + Basic / AHCI
* JMicron-PATA (libata) + JMicron-ROM activated / deactivated + Basic / AHCI

- in some settings / configurations it doesn't even recognize the EZ-Backup / Silicon Image Hardware-Raid

- at every configuration it either doesn't recognize the drives
Quote:
qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
failed to IDENTIFY
(I/O error, err_mask = 0x4

- or performance is sluggish
Quote:
JMB361: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)

(should be, since I don't get to my system, SATA somehow isn't recognized)
=> kernel panic, can't find block device (hd0,0) ...

Help / Idea anyone ?

I'm on 2.6.18-rc7 with my own libata-patchset. So, I'm not using MM.

P5b deluxe. Maybe it's a little mistake to assume you are using the same board.

Quote:

I don't know what you mean with activating/deactivationg the JMicron-ROM. Unfortunately I'm not at home and can't check if my board / bios version has these options (and I can't remember it either.)

I really don't have a Sillicon Image chip in my PC.

Hmn Too bad. So you're saying that the libata code doesn't work and the IDE code is working slowly? Do you disable the IDE driver when using the libata one (and vice versa)?

Libata is really doing the job nice here. My cdroms work and I can burn DVD's without problems.

For 2.6.18 I'll provide a libata patch with all PATA drivers included.
Remember to disable all IDE drivers and setting:
Code:

CONFIG_ATA=y
CONFIG_SATA_AHCI=y
CONFIG_PATA_JMICRON=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SG=y

The patch is big, mainly because it moves some files from drivers/scsi to drivers/ata:

Thanks irondog, that's it what I was looking for, a patch, which takes care of everything :wink:

with JMicron-ROM I meant the JMicron-Boot-ROM Option in Bios

I have 2 probs with your patch:
- ata_piix doesn't build <== no compiling in or module is possible
- JMicron shows the same behavior as in the previous kernels:

Code:
ata 3.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)
ata 3.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata 3.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)
ata 3.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)
ata 3.00: failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)
ata 3.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xec)

then it panics because it can't find my SATA (ata_piix)

the "good" is: it only takes 3 minutes (instead of 9 minutes) to detect the controller, I don't know if I had access to the harddisks if it booted to the end ...

I'm not sure I have this one. I'm still not at home and can't check it for you. Have you got this P5b board?

Quote:

Yep, sorry. Typo.
In drivers/ata/ata_piix.c line 562:
Code:
.host_flags          = ATA_FLAG_SATA |

should be:
Code:
.flags          = ATA_FLAG_SATA |

Hey, but you don't need ata_piix in AHCI mode!!! And I must say ahci mode works better than IDE mode!
So you shouldn't be using the ata_piix driver I think.

If you have the same configuration as I have, it should work. I really have no problems with my bios-{version,settings} and kernel-{version,settings}. I'm dualbooting with vista RC1. In case of trouble I allways have a reference OS which tells me my hardware is not broken. ;)

  • You could change the bios setting to use AHCI instead of IDE and for the kernel CONFIG_SATA_AHCI instead of CONFIG_ATA_PIIX.
  • You could change the line of code to get the driver compiling (which you actually don't need).
  • You could download a patch against 2.6.18 vanilla which has been released today:

And here is the same patch against Gentoo sources 2.6.18-gentoo:
http://tienstra4.flatnet.tudelft.nl/~gerte/2.6.18-gentoo-pata.txt
This will remove all gentoo-sources libata drivers (and libata driver updates that gentoo-sources covers).

So, no MM stuff for me anymore, only the libata updated drivers :)

Thanks ! I will give it a try,

does this change anything in behavior ?
I tried 2.6.18 (final) before but it took pretty long to boot up

I think the problem actually is the IDE-Harddrives with the JMicron controller

strangely the p5w dh handbook said that it doesn't support atapi drives, so I connected the CD-drive to the intel ICH7R,
now it's somewhat difficult to change that configuration ...

Hmn. So you have a different board, I have the deluxe version. I haven't tested with harddisks. I've been using SATA harddisks for ages and the next thing to throw away are those IDE burner and cdrom drive so I can use 100% SATA.

I wish I could do that :wink:

Thank you, irondog, for all your until now :D

thankfully my "issue" now is somewhat "solved": yesterday I emerged mm-sources 2.6.18-r1, booted my system (x86) with "irqpoll" and it worked ! :P

both IDE-harddrives are now managed by libata, recognized as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc & it works great (ok, there still isn't udma 100 => I only get 45 / 60 MB/s max. but that should be an bios-problem with ASUS)
